Welcome To Strathmere, New Jersey

Strathmere Photo Slideshow (coming soon)

From the northern point of Corson’s Inlet to the southern point of Townsend’s Inlet in Sea Isle City, the entire island that contains the unincorporated area known as Strathmere was once owned by John and Jennie Burk. Matilda Landis took control of the island in 1881, and she, along with attorney Charles Landis, began to divide and develop the island with the Sea Isle Improvement Corporation.

Corson’s Inlet got its name from settlers John and Peter Corson who sailed across the inlet between Ocean City and what would eventually become Strathmere. In 1884 the West Jersey Railroad built a line north through Corson’s Inlet to Ocean City, New Jersey. This was followed by a number of other companies, including Brighton Shores, Corson’s Inlet Land Company and The Strathmere Corporation who wanted to build a seashore resort on the island.

Strathmere received its new name in 1912. Prior to this Corson’s Inlet had become a portion of Upper Township in 1905 in Cape May County, and the year 1908 saw the Atlantic Seashore Improvement Company of Pennsylvania begin their efforts to develop the town.

In 1925 the Coast Guard base for Corson’s Inlet located in Ocean City on the 58 Street Beach moved to Strathmere Bay because it was believed that the location would better serve the area, and the Coast Guard occupied the building until 1964 when it became a private home.

Strathmere‘s history involves hurricanes and the local determination to rebuild after natural disasters. This quiet town is a summer resort where people escape from their busy lives in the urban and suburban sprawl in the Northeast. Because the year round population is less than 200 people (175 persons according to the 2000 Census), over half of the homes are available to rent, with other accommodations including cottages by the water.

Just 1.5 miles long and two blocks wide, Strathmere occupies the “thinnest” part of any barrier island along the New Jersey shoreline. Driving through Strathmere gives travelers a look at what life at the shore must have been like before summer visitors came in a great press of people. Lifeguards watch the Strathmere beaches as vacationers, weekenders and day-trippers enjoy swimming, surfing, sunbathing and fishing off the ocean side beaches.

Those who come to Strathmere to vacation like it for its quiet atmosphere and distance from the hustle and bustle of the mainland. In some ways it seems to be caught in an earlier time when the pace of life was slower, the needs were less demanding, and the emphasis was on simply enjoying nature, family and a welcomed removal from the stresses of society. The appearance of the community reminds some visitors of a New England coastal town compared to the more heavily built-up areas along the shore. Whether it’s the sea, a trick of the natural light, or other factors, when people visit Strathmere they can almost believe that they are far removed from the congestion of civilization.

Strathmere is a relaxed and peaceful place juxtaposed against the beauty of the Atlantic Ocean, and its beach is the only one along “Five Mile Island” where you don’t have to pay for beach tags because they’re not required. However, you won’t find a crush of people on Strathmere beach because it really is removed from the sometimes frantic activities in other resort towns. Strathmere is a place where the term “vacation” takes on the original meaning of the word – to get away from everything and restore the soul.
